"This photo was taken at the Arnold Classic some years back. When I asked Dick Hartzell if he wanted to take a splits picture, he picked a random bystander and their conversation went like this: "Son, can you drop your balls on the floor?" "huh?" "Want to see an old guy do the splits? Here, take our picture(hands him camera and clears the crowded area)" That's right, this is a 70 year old man who can drop into the splits completely cold. On top of that, his background was not in gymnastics or dance but in football. Let me hear your excuses now...go ahead. Dick embodies one of the main attributes I respect in a teacher: walk the walk and practice what you preach. I am very wary of the teacher who doesn't follow their own advice and this is perfect example of sincerity and doing things right. In addition to his superior mobility, Dick was a major inspiration for many of the prehab and rehab protocols I use in my current practice. He was very ahead of his time in the use of rubber bands for athletics and was one of the earliest people I can think of who was against icing injuries(advice that I have also followed for many years). I am very much in the interest of being able to do what I do for a very long time, it's not hard to see how these principles can apply. I leave you with a short video of Dick Hartzell talking about maintaining mobility as we age while stretching his hips. I think we can all learn something here"
